Hope Reins

for a better tomorrow

Project "Saving Grace"

Your support can bring freedom and healing to horses in need.

If you have listened to the news or attended a local horse sale, you know the need for rescue shelters for horses is growing.  "Saving Grace is a program in which the ranch rescues horses from situations of abuse and neglect.  Because it is not always possible to confiscate the horses in need of rescue, the ranch must purchase their freedom in some cases.

Once at the ranch, our goal is to immediately assess and treat the physical needs of the horse, begin the rehabilitation process, evaluate them for the use in our programs and offer an adoption program for those better suited in a safe, loving and caring home.

Here's the Facts:

Tennessee is one of the nation's largest horse industry states. As of 2004, there were 17,900 horses reported (not all get reported) to be in the 7 counties of Hope Reins service area (Grainger, Hawkins, Hamblen, Hancock, Jefferson, Claiborne and Sullivan).

The following are just a few of the contributing factors to the increase in abused and neglected horses:

*Lack of knowledge of how to properly care for horses

*Improper training methods which become abusive/harmful

*Economic difficulties - many do not realize or understand the expense and level of care involved in the ownership of horses

*A flooded market with unwanted horses

-Discarded colts produced solely for the purpose of keeping mares pregnant by farms contracting with companies to produce "pregnant mare urine" to manufactor a drug called "Premurine"

-Owners who discard horses due to wanting a "better performance" horse for racing or show
